P. Kevin Morley is an exceptional feature photographer who is also an accomplished writer. Morley can spin a good yarn. His warm personal stories describing how he captured each shot provide a new dimension to his often funny images.  Spanning his 40-year career as a professional photojournalist, Morley’s book brings you on assignment with him. Kevin Morley’s Photoadventures are often-amusing reflections and unusual experiences revealing rare insight to the story behind the image. As a child he was inspired by the vivid colors of his first sunset photo. But taking his mother’s advice, he turned his lens toward people, which provided much more fodder for his musings in his professional life. Morley is an open book revealing how working as a newspaper photographer, his acceptance of everyone he meets results in many, unique and idiosyncratic exchanges. I recall Morley’s positive attitude always opened doors for him at the university where I met him years ago. His candor today divulges openness and naivety and yet, sincerity and persistence drive him to make honest, solicitous and sometimes hilarious photographs. Morley takes the reader on memorable assignments such as a visit to a nudist camp, his shocking arrest while covering spring break, as well as surprises he had while photographing politicians and celebrities. I appreciate his approach and thoughtful quips of advice when he shares the oddities and quirky, chance meetings he has had when photographing everyday people throughout his long journalistic career.

I have always thought that the secret to being a good photojournalist is the ability to connect with people, and no one does it better than Kevin. He has made a career of establishing such connections and his work reflects that. I had the pleasure of editing Kevin’s work for more than 10 years and I was always impressed with his ability to find and express just the right emotion. Above all, Kevin is a great story teller. Whether he was photographing an emotionally charged event or a light moment with underlying humor, his photos always got the story right. Kevin’s photos were always filled with life, and they reflected life in all its complexities.
